Bodmin Jail

Visit the spooky all weather family attraction and experience the life of an eighteenth century prisoner, see the gallows, stocks and underground cells, all set within three acres of original buildings and grounds.

Built in 1779 for King George III, it took over 20,000 tons of grantite from Bodmin's local 'Cuckoo' Quarry to finish it. During World War I, the jail held state papers, the Doomsday Book and the Crown Jewels.

Bonython Estate Gardens

Discover a unique blend of tropical and traditional horticulture planted in these stunning estate gardens that lie at the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula. The manor house strikes a dramatic sea-facing pose, its grand façade dating back to the 1780s. It is since new South African owners who took over in 1999 that a modern and exotic horticultural twist has brought Bonython to the attention of the keen plant brigades.

Explore the South African roots beneath the scorching display of ornamental grasses, cannas and proteas that bring one of the three lakes into a froth of colour throughout August and September. But the rainbows don’t stop here. The herbaceous borders of the walled garden are lined with alliums, catmint and carefully selected varieties that enhance the blue, purple, yellow and white colour themes. Even the herb garden has been sprinkled with ‘picking flowers’ to infuse it with vibrant pink and burgundy hues.

The array of species is enough to whet any garden-lovers appetite, especially when it’s served up with a jaw-dropping view that stretches over the orchard of Cornish apple trees towards the swan-scattered Lake Joy. And joy it really is, for a wander back through the woodland walk, or a meander through the tree fern and rhododendron dell can be described as nothing less. Indulge in the enchanting atmosphere of what was a traditional garden, and has now been passionately infused with innovative planting to become one of the most interesting gardens in the southwest.

Bowood Park Hotel & Golf Club

Set in 230 acres of rolling hills and woodland, the Bowood Park Estate once formed part of a 13th century deer park owned by the Black Prince. Recognised as the premier parkland course in Cornwall, Bowood Park has now added the extra luxury of a 31-bedroomed hotel within the main clubhouse building. All bedrooms have private bathrooms, colour TV and tea and coffee making facilities and most have stunning views of the golf course - some with private terraces.

Water is the key to the magic of the Course. A tributary of the River Allen nibbles at the entire length of the 12th fairway and forms a horseshoe around the bewitching 12th green which is the signature hole of the golf course. A natural spring rises on high ground behind the 5th and feeds 26 ponds and lakes which double as water hazards and wildlife reserves with many species of water fowl in residence.

The Course is a delight for all standards of golfer with a classical par 72 of 6,692 yards for men and 5,700 yards for the ladies. The relatively light bunkering and lush fairways lead to large, judiciously placed greens, the smallest of 450 square metres and the largest 900. Facilities include a driving range with covered bays and an ample supply of golf buggies at only £18 per round.

British International Helicopters

The Penzance - St Mary's route has been operated by helicopter since 1964 and has achieved the distinction of becoming the world's longest running scheduled helicopter service. The Tresco service was inaugurated in 1983 and therefore 2004 marks two major milestones in the history of the company. We are the only air operator to fly direct to both Islands, Tresco and St Mary's. The journey from Penzance takes only 20 minutes. This service flies daily (except Sundays) to St Mary's and Tresco and offers fast efficient flights throughout the year.

The aircraft, two Sikorsky S61 helicopters, allow the passengers stunning views of the West Penwith Peninsular and western approaches whilst transporting them in comfort to their archipelago destination. There is a friendly cabin attendant on each flight; who will answer any questions you might have on your 20 - minute journey.

The cabin of the S61 helicopter is spacious with large windows at each passenger seat row. There are single seats on the left of the cabin aisle, with double seats on the right. Everyone gets a great view on the 20 - minute ride to the Islands.

Caerhays Castle Gardens

Caerhays Castle, which is owned by the Williams family is located in a sheltered valley overlooking Porthluney Cove on the South Cornish Coast equidistant from Truro and St. Austell.

The surrounding parkland and woodland gardens were created originally from the discoveries of the plant hunters in China shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Since then a great deal of hybridisation work and especially the creation of the first x williamsii camellias has taken place at Caerhays to create the extensive woodland gardens which visitors can admire and enjoy today.
