Here are the Gardens listed in the Great Gardens of Cornwall leaflet, distributed around Cornwall by Publicity South West. Enjoying the warmth of the Gulf Stream, these magical Cornish gardens are home to a wealth of the most exciting, rare and beautiful plants and trees in the British Isles.

The creative genius of the early nineteenth-century Cornish garden owners, and their hunger and passion for exotica, led them to sponsor the great Victorian plant hunting expeditions. The seeds and plants which they brought back from all over the world helped create these unique examples of wild and magnificent living theatre.

Bonython Estate Gardens

Discover a unique blend of tropical and traditional horticulture planted in these stunning estate gardens that lie at the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula. The manor house strikes a dramatic sea-facing pose, its grand façade dating back to the 1780s. It is since new South African owners who took over in 1999 that a modern and exotic horticultural twist has brought Bonython to the attention of the keen plant brigades.

Explore the South African roots beneath the scorching display of ornamental grasses, cannas and proteas that bring one of the three lakes into a froth of colour throughout August and September. But the rainbows don’t stop here. The herbaceous borders of the walled garden are lined with alliums, catmint and carefully selected varieties that enhance the blue, purple, yellow and white colour themes. Even the herb garden has been sprinkled with ‘picking flowers’ to infuse it with vibrant pink and burgundy hues.

The array of species is enough to whet any garden-lovers appetite, especially when it’s served up with a jaw-dropping view that stretches over the orchard of Cornish apple trees towards the swan-scattered Lake Joy. And joy it really is, for a wander back through the woodland walk, or a meander through the tree fern and rhododendron dell can be described as nothing less. Indulge in the enchanting atmosphere of what was a traditional garden, and has now been passionately infused with innovative planting to become one of the most interesting gardens in the southwest.

Caerhays Castle Gardens

Caerhays Castle, which is owned by the Williams family is located in a sheltered valley overlooking Porthluney Cove on the South Cornish Coast equidistant from Truro and St. Austell.

The surrounding parkland and woodland gardens were created originally from the discoveries of the plant hunters in China shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Since then a great deal of hybridisation work and especially the creation of the first x williamsii camellias has taken place at Caerhays to create the extensive woodland gardens which visitors can admire and enjoy today.

Lamorran House Gardens

The gardens at Lamorran House, as now laid out, were started when Mr and Mrs Dudley-Cooke acquired the property in 1982. A large collection of Rhododendrons and evergreen azaleas were brought from their former garden and formed the basis for the early plantings.

Situated on the Rosland Peninsula with extensive views of St. Anthony's Head and lighthouse, the garden enjoys a favoured microclimate in an already favoured area, and frosts are very rare and not of any severity except in a very exceptional year.

Lost Gardens of Heligan, The

The award winning Lost Gardens of Heligan extend to some eighty acres of superb pleasure grounds together with a magnificent complex of walled gardens and a huge, productive vegetable garden, all fast returning to their former glory. Lying at the heart of one of the most mysterious estates in England, Heligan, the former seat of the Tremayne family, is now the site of the largest garden restoration in Europe.

Its extraordinary plant collection together with a range of exotic glasshouses, working buildings, romantic structures and designed landscapes reflect the past passions and interests of the family. The combination of these and the mild Cornish climate has resulted in a garden (or in truth a series of gardens within a garden) which is unique.

Heligan restored provides a testament to the Victorian vision and ingenuity which first created this subtropical paradise. We hope that you will now enjoy finding out about the project and that you will feel inspired to come and see the real thing for yourself!

Tresco Abbey Gardens

THROW OUT THE RULE-BOOK. Set aside your preconceptions about what can and cannot be grown in frost-cursed, rain-soaked Britain. These Abbey Gardens are a glorious exception - a perennial Kew without the glass - shrugging off salt spray and Atlantic gales to host 20,000 exotic plants.

Many would stand no chance on the Cornish mainland, less than 30 miles away. Yet even at the winter equinox more than 300 plants will be in flower. All in all, the garden is home to species from 80 countries, ranging from Brazil to New Zealand and Burma to South Africa.

Trewithien Gardens

Trewithen means 'house of the trees' and the name truly describes this fine early Georgian house in its splendid setting of wood and parkland. Country Life described the house as 'one of the outstanding West Country houses of the 18th century' and Penelope Hobhouse has described the garden as 'perhaps the most beautiful woodland garden in England'.

Trewithen Gardens, created and extensified by George Johnstone in the first fifty years of this centry are outstanding and internationally famous. The great glade on the south side is a masterpiece of landscape gardening and is a monument to the genius of George Johnstone. These gardens covering some thirty acres are renowned for their magnificent collection of camellias, rhododendrons, magnolias and many rare trees and shrubs which are seldom found elsewhere in Britain. The extensive woodland gardens are surrounded by traditional landscaped parkland.

Enjoy the peace of these magnificent gardens with their outstanding collections of magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons as well as other rare trees and shrubs.
