Cornwall Celebrates for the Second Time with Garden Media Oscars

Following last year’s success the Gardens of Cornwall campaign will again sponsor the Garden Writers’ Guild Radio Broadcast Award - one of 17 categories at the 2006 Garden Writers’ Guild Awards, the media Oscars of the gardening world.

The 2006 honours list will be announced at a prestigious awards lunch at The Savoy in London on 30 November. At the VIP event, ambassadors from a broad range of Cornwall’s gardens will be attending, promoting the gardens of Cornwall onto a national media stage.

In their 15 th year, the Guild’s awards recognise the highest standards of creative communications in books, magazines, newspapers, photographs, television and radio. This year there are two new awards, the Environmental Award and the New Media Award. The Garden Writers’ Guild Radio Broadcast Award is open to the makers of national and regional radio gardening programmes, including features, documentaries, interviews and phone-ins. Each award is judged by a panel of Guild members and invited specialists in each category.

Claire Vickers, Gardens Co-ordinator, says “The Gardens of Cornwall are delighted to be involved in the Garden Writers’ Guild Awards once again. We have decided to sponsor the Radio Broadcast Award for the second year running due to the particularly unique journalistic strength required for covering such a visual and sensory topic as gardens on the radio, therefore the award is unique in what it acknowledges and praises.”

In addition to the media categories, there is a special lifetime achievement award acknowledging outstanding and sustained achievement by an individual - previous title holders include Geoff Amos, Penelope Hobhouse, Roy Lancaster, Joy Larkcom, Alan Titchmarsh and last year’s winner Dr David Hessayon.

The Garden Writers’ Guild brings together garden writers, photographers and broadcasters in a bid to raise the quality of garden writing and broadcasting and keep members up to date with what’s going on in the world of gardening and horticulture.
