Save Our Pasty

A debate began today over whether the Cornish pasty should have a protected status, the BBC web site reported. As we all well know, it is only a real Cornish pasty if it has been prepared here in Cornwall, but there are many imitations available.

Newcastle Brown Ale and Melton Mowbray pork pies already enjoy a protected status, and it has benefited their regions greatly. The benefits to the county speak for themselves when you consider what the pasty brings into the economy; £150,000,000. That is more than enough to worry a few food manufacturers outside the county who are very unhappy about the proposal.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is pushing this proposal, know as Protected Geographical Indication, which is an EU initiative. It will stop imitations from damaging local economies.

If you think of the Bakewell tart, you will envision something quite different to what is produced in Bakewell itself. Perhaps this initiative will preserve local delicacies and add new flavours to the country?
