Surf Exhibition If it's flat and becalmed, Falmouth has something to offer those who are desperate to get in amongst the surf. The new Surf's Up! exhibition celebrates surfing in the UK. England experienced the phenomena in 1918 when people began to use bellyboards, and by 1929, Newquay announced itself as the centre of the UK surfing world. A claim that seems to have been more than justified by its continuing ascendance as the primary destination throughout Europe. The exhibition is the largest yet on British soil, and is taking place at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth until January 8th 2006. Previously it has been exhibited at The Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, and will move on to Bristol, Barnstaple and Bournemouth. Technological developments, the people who got it going over here, the effect on local economies and environmental issues are detailed. Plenty of photographs and video footage are on display, as is the first surfboard in Europe... I'll see you there. Carl Spencer |
